Crushed

Cellphone Panda
Commuting Panda

Now I know how the lone breakaway feels when they are caught by the bunch with metres to go.

Normally my wife and I car share the journey to work. This week, inspired by the need to get slim enough to fit into a new surfing wetsuit, I have been trying to cycle to work every day. We leave the front door at the same time, and so far I have been locking up my bike at work as my wife has driven onto the car park.* Naturally I have raised my arms in the air in the manner of a Tour de France.

This morning I again made good progress, but in the last 250 metres, as I exited the last roundabout before work I caught a glimpse of the old Beetle over my shoulder. I put in a last superhuman effort up the bastard climb to work but it was all in vain as she came cruising past.

I was crushed in defeat.

* Yes I do feel guilty that the car only has one person in it this week, but after work I have been riding to the stables to do the horses** while my wife has been driving home, so while the car only has half it’s usual occupants at least it is only doing half it’s usual mileage.

** You read it right. Bikes, surfing and horses. I’m spreading myself too thin to be good at all three.

A dogs dinner of links to stuff that we have arranged in an apparently random manner, though I assure you it made sense at the time.

For all that we like the up-to-the minute offerings of the web there‚s nothing like a proper badly photocopied A5 fanzine or a glossily printed proper magazine to keep you occupied on the throne. Here, in no particular order, is our material of choice.
