The ettiquette of arm warmers
After a scorching hot fifty-miler out into roadie training territory yesterday (a ride round one of the favourite loops of pretty much all the local racing clubs and the more-distant CTC branches) I was wondering about the ettiquette of arm-warmers.
Or more precisely, when can you dispense with them? And the knee warmers and overshoes. The Euro-Pros are already in full summer shorties - even the Paris-Roubaix was a dust bowl this year.
Yet there I am out on the hot tarmac in sleeveless shirt and sun block but all the ‘proper’ roadies (you can spot them - they hunt in packs) are still in arm warmers, knee warmers, overshoes, and in at least one case a full long sleeved training jacket over his undershirt.
I figure it must be some kind of “I’m taking it easy because I’m only out on a training ride and I could whip your ass if I wanted” statement.
At least I know how to excuse my pathetic average speeds in future. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a winter clothing catalogue to look through…

So do I.
And I’ve a lot farther to go.
