What Are The Chances Of That?
Footpath 24?

Did folk riding horses from Hurst Green over to Chipping on what is now known as Bridleway 8 really have to continue on foot, carrying their steed, on Footpath 24 before joining Bridleway 25?
Somehow I doubt it.
Evidence more of a powerful man denying passage over his land when the rights of way were drawn up not evidence that horses (and now bikes) aren’t allowed on it.

Still, it’s good to note that any walker telling me off for being here is also in the wrong, so can shove their self-righteousness up their arse.

Same for Salter Fell / Hornby road (call it what you want) to Whitendale footpath - Did ancient users crossing Salter fell either:-
a) Fork right at top Salter fell and drop down valley to Whitendale and Dunsop Bridge etc beyond?
or
b) Descend all the way to southern end of Salter Fell road then climb right back up bridleway to Dunsop head, across the top then descend down to Whitendale?
And as for Longridge - looking at the widespread devastation after the latest treecutting, can’t see how they can accuse anyone of “erosion” up there :-)

Ah, the Salter Fell Road is the old Roman road, so no, I don’t think it did go to Whitendale.

I now it’s not the point, but could they not use the road to connect the two points?
Obviously it wasn’t a road back in ye olde days.

Not quite correct - only the south half of Salter Fell road is the Roman road. The bit to Salter isn’t, and the two join near where the Whitendale footpath begins.
And we don’t really have to prove horse use of “footpaths” back to Roman times do we? ;-)
