Inspired by the recent discovery of copies of The Outcast for sale there was a brief reminisence.
It’s difficult to believe that when The Outcast was first being published there was a single page of frame-builders and singlespeed manufacturers helpful to the cause.
Using the powers of the Wayback Machine it’s possible to delve back into this websites history. As recently as November 2001 even we saw fit to publish and haphazardly maintain a list of makers. You can tell it was unceremoniously cribbed from the aforementioned ‘zine.
For various reasons maintenance of the list dropped off the bottom of our “Things To Do Today” list. It has quietly disappeared from The Outcast too.
Singlespeed only manufacturers such as Spot and On-One have grown up and diversified into 29ers and, yes, gears. New manufacturers have come along. Even The Man has entered the field, and corporate companies like Specialized and Trek have singlespeeds in their line up.
Maybe the page death was survival of the fittest. There is no point in maintaining such a list today. A list of who isn’t on the singlespeed bandwagon would be shorter.
