Beastway R.I.P
Thanks to Kelvin for alerting us to the fact that Beastway may never be restored as part of the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics.
Beastway has been nearly dead since racing stopped there last November to make way for Olympic site redevelopment. Previous Olympic legacy plans, including those shown to the IOC at the time of its final inspection always indicated that mountainbiking would return to the site. Back in February 2005 the plans for the velopark quite clearly included “a cyclo-cross/cross-country course mountain bike course“.
Now it seems that is not the case, and the nails are being banged into the coffin lid for mountain bike racing in inner London. The London Development Agency released their revised Velopark plans on 5 February. No replacement for Beastway is included, though it appears that a national shortage of five-a-side pitches is being more than adequately addressed.
