Happy Anniversary

Aluminium is supposed to be ten years, but what the hell.

Sprains Suck

While walking the dogs in the dark on Friday night at Twentyfour12 I tripped in a hole and twisted my left ankle pretty bad.
It didn’t hurt during the race, and it’s not stopped me riding, but it’s now really really started to niggle.
I pulled my yard boots off the other day and with the swelling […]

Twentyfour12

CampCourtesy Drac

Twentyfour12 is a brand new twenty four hour race on the calendar, and with a nice relaxed feel. It was reminiscent of Mountain Mayhem or Sleepless In The Saddle in their formative years. Or even an event.
A cheeky enclave had been formed by the side of the track and pre-race preparation consisted mainly […]

Long Weekend

It’s been a long busy weekend, what with rides and races, so there’s much to catch up on. For the sake of reading I’m going to break it down into manageable chunks.
The weekend started on Thursday last, with an offer to ride the Singletrack Magazine test Turner Flux to give them some 5 Spot/Burner […]

Hurray For Hope

My game of wheel chess commences. I’ve finally gotten round to phoning Hope Technology to get hold of a new splined spider for the mechanical disc brakes.
After rooting round in the basement they have come up trumps! Top chaps.
This will allow me to build up an old suspension front hub to work with the mechanical […]

Bye Bye

There was almost a tear in my eye as we watched our faithful old Renault Maudsley leaving the yard tonight, being driven by someone else.
So here’s one last picture of her, taken in Thetford Forest, 2003. While those around us shook frost from their tents we had hot showers and a cooked breakfast. I was […]

Le Maillot Jaune - Fashion Victim

No, I’m not talking about the maillot jaune…
After our epic ride out we went to Charnock Richard Cycles, Britain’s biggest independent cycle retailer, to scope out budget road bikes for one of the family. The road section is full of aluminium and carbon framed skinny tyred beauties from the likes of Trek, Specialized and Giant.
And […]

Super Motard

Plenty of Room

Another weekend, another long ride out together. Since I broke the rear hub of my hardtail we are either out on horribly mismatched bikes, a Pompino and a geared Spot, or fat-tyred full suspension behemoths.
Or we could do as the motorbikes do and go super-motard. Cue one pair of Specialized Fat Boys for […]

RIP Alps 4R

Alps 4R On the Burner in happier times

I noticed the back of the tandem was squatted right down yesterday morning. Most unusual.
Fetching the shock pump revealed that the venerable Alps 4R had lost all pressure. A few strokes later and it was obvious it was never going to hold any again. Almost as fast as […]

I Don’t Get It…

Not only are Swobo back, but they are about to
launch a range of street bikes in an attempt to make cycling ‘cool’.
Oh dear.
To me this move into urban cool street bikes just looks like the sort of incestuous marketing to trendy This Life/Cold Feet types that led to the dot-com boom.
It leaves me cold.
