Sense of Community

Once any organisation grows large enough the law of averages says that you’ll start to get disgruntled customers. Flickr has been taking flak lately in some sections of the IT press for being generally flakey, or quietly demoting pictures so that the general public can’t find them.

For all this moaning SSUK 2006 was an example to me of how well community software can work. After the event the various folks who’d been there with cameras met again via one or more online forums and agreed to upload shots to flickr, and use a common tag on the photos. It was then a simple matter for the organisers to provide a single link to them all.

Maybe we won’t be replacing the mainstream cycling websites and their online galleries anytime soon, but the result of this online collaboration is the biggest collection - over 500 - of community photos I’ve ever seen from any race all gathered in the same place.

Which is a good thing, right?

A dogs dinner of links to stuff that we have arranged in an apparently random manner, though I assure you it made sense at the time.
