Cycle Deaths On The Rise

The Times Online today reported that cycling deaths are on the rise. Partly this is a result of more commuters taking to their bikes in London.
I can’t agree with this simplistic response from

Worrywarts

“The two numbers I get asked about most are the least relevant in terms of performance. These are weight and wheelbase. Each is a resultant of several far more important design considerations.”

Losers

There are always some folk who have a whinge about some aspect of twenty four hour racing.
The course was too easy/too hard/too dangerous/too flat/too hilly.
The weather was too hot/too wet.
I’ve never come across a moral whinge before.
“It seems that a lot of the mixed teams who did well had their weakest rider […]

“That Bike Deserves Better”

Another year, another Mayhem, another Hecklers Corner.
Turns out they were right too.
My head was all over the place at the start of the race. A shortened course and more rideable climbs - actually do-able on 32:16 - should have made this a great solo 24 hour comeback event. So much for theory. In practice […]

End of an Era

Bye Bye Maudsley horsebox, hello Kevin Parker replacement.
Yes, the old girl that has carried not just the horses but a stable full of mountain bikes to races all over England, and up into Scotland is for sale.
She’s showing her age on the long distance runs and we’ve just picked up a replacement. Kirsty did a […]

Overheard…

The best products are made by people that have a passion for them. Gary Fisher has a passion for 29ers.
After riding a Rig I can only conclude that Gary Fisher really fucking hates singlespeeds and singlespeeders.
Maybe that time I caught him on the final downhill at Mayhem 2003 on my diddy wheels upset him?
Update: Kirsty […]

Mayhem Preparation

I got the bikes ready for Mayhem last night.
Two singlespeeds only. Despite my doubts I’m leaving the gears behind.
I always like to race with no Camelbak at 24 hour events to save my back. So I’ve frame mounted the pumps and I’ve got a toolbag that I can easily swap between bikes.
Weather for the weekend […]

Back and Forth

Back
John Le Baptiste has finished his splendid video of the SSUK 2006.
Forth
SSMM this weekend and I’m really not sure I’m singlespeed ready. Next year is almost guaranteed to be singlespeed as plans are afoot for a special, one night only, reunion of The Singlespeeders of Destruction.
The urge to make the first ten on one speed […]

Wheel Chess

Hurray!
I went out early on Saturday morning hoping to fit in a long ride and still beat the heat of the day. I’ve been expanding my Trough of Bowland loop by taking ever more distant roads over the Bowland Fells into the Lune Valley.
My last ride out this way, over the Tatham Fells, had […]

Sense of Community

Once any organisation grows large enough the law of averages says that you’ll start to get disgruntled customers. Flickr has been taking flak lately in some sections of the IT press for being generally flakey, or quietly demoting pictures so that the general public can’t find them.
For all this moaning SSUK 2006 was an example […]
