David and Goliath

Turns out the US Patent and Trademark Office has ordered a re-examination of Amazon.com’s 1-Click patent.
Not so related to bikes.
Well, it shouldn’t be.
But any thread about four-bar v. faux bar rear ends these days inevtiably involves a slanging match between the Turner and Ellsworth owners about the rights and wrongs of the ICT patent and […]

XXIX

Raleigh are bringing out a rigid singlespeed 29er, the XXIX.
Here’s the good part. It won’t be built with ugly looking lanky legged suspension corrected forks.
Looks like a good chassis on which to mount a tall 26er suspension fork and a 26″ front wheel and get this 69er idea properly, er, rolling.

Raiding the Memory Banks

From Guitar Ted’s blog I followed this link to MTBR about the history of 29ers. Interesting stuff. Even Ross Shafer pops up to deny any involvement ;-)
I remember reading a review of Bruce Gordon’s Rock N Road in an American magazine (Bicycling?) way back in the early 1990s. Although it used 700c wheels and “fat” […]

One Less Plane

Let’s all just forget One Less Car for a second.
Aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 emissions in the world, and exempt from any limits.
Can you spot what’s wrong with this quote about the Airbus A380?
“It’s an efficient and clean and environmentally friendly aircraft, and it has lower fuel consumption per seat, and produces […]

Revenge

Some of you may recall that back in February I had a rant about the local road safety partnership, and produced this image of accidents at a local junction:

Yesterday as I cycled home some fool had plonked himself in the advanced cycle lane, reserved for cyclists turning right. Why? Well, this guy is obviously so […]

Make Your Mind Up

I see that the 29er elite (ahem) are getting excited at the prospect of a 29er Cannondale. This elite rolling up to praise Cannondale as one of the few name manufacturers to leap onto their bandwagon and hence save the future of cycling includes some of the same hard-core one-speeders who pilloried them as Crack’n’Fail […]

Endurance - Yes, Strength - No!

After a year off I seem to have turned, if you’ll excuse the motorbike analogy, from a hulking great V-twin with plenty of torque and power, but very thirsty on fuel, into a puny little moped. Revvy, noisy (!), goes for hours on a single powerbar and sips of water, but runs out of steam […]

Lord No!

Another one enters the ring.
Disc brake only clean looks?
Sadly, I think not.
Now if it looked as neat as the Ala Carte on the other hand…

Dirt Is Good

One of the most inspiring TV clips for cycling these days comes courtesy of Persil, showing three kids on skinny tyred BMXs racing along some Thetford like trails.
Makes me want to ride somewhere fast, twisty and swoopy every time I see it.
Good to see Persil putting some money into cycling too, by supporting the BCF […]
