Xmas Fettling

Handcrafted My Xmas present this year was a bit of a double whammy.

Kirsty bought me some lovely White Industries Eno cranks from those nice people at Sideways Cycles. This meant that I had a nice pair of Race Face Turbines, and more importantly a non-wobbly bottom bracket, going spare for the Turner.

So I spent a freezing morning outside fettling bikes. First of all remove the Race Face bottom bracket from the Spot. Despite being so cold that it came out sheathed in ice (Note to self: remove seatpost and tip the bike upside down occasionally), it came out easily. Then slap in a totally unsuitable American titanium bottom bracket with sealing more suited to California. All done in minutes. Despite the generally hideous state of my bike. ENO (Note 2 to self: wash it occasionally).

Given the ease that the Race Face bottom bracket had been removed from it’s crap encrusted shell I though it would be a simple matter to remove the Shimano equivalent from the nicely sealed Turner shell. No such luck. Why does removing a Shimano bottom bracket always involve bolting the removal tool to the spindle, large spanners and extension tubes?
