Top and Tail Rides: Top
Today I should be topping and tailing my day with rides in the dark.
I went out this morning at about ten past seven, just as the eastern sky was starting to get lighter, turning from black to merely deep blue. I used to experience the dawn many times when I had a 20 mile commute, but the last few years it’s been relegated to the dawn lap at 24 hour races.
As I rode down the first hill there were two rivers ahead of me. One was the real river, sluggishly working it’s way out to sea. The other was a river of red taillights working it’s way out of the city on the way to the aircraft factory out by the coast. Hundreds of people on their way to sit and read the papers on company time until the bosses roll in at 9, all the while charging the government over-inflated prices for today’s technology tomorrow.
Each section of trail ended with the sky a little lighter than when it began. By the time I got back it was light enough that it had turned from blue to grey revealing that today will be run under cover of cloud.
This evening I will be going over to Calderdale for a Singletrack Thursday evening ride. That one will take place entirely in the dark.
