On our way to SITS
I’m on one of the Sideways Cycles teams for the Kona SITS 2005. I like riding for Sideways, the teams are always nice and relaxed. So after work I fill the car with camping gear & dogs, slap the Turner on the roofrack and my wife* chauffers me there.
The event has a new venue, Catton Park in Derbyshire. I’ve raced there before in a short course XC race, so I’ve fitted a pair of the most mud-capable tyres I can lay my hands on. On the way we pass the venue that has been used for the last four years, Trentham Gardens. It’s been turned into an open-air monkey park. A dozen years racing there replaced by primates. More entertaining (and lucrative) than watching spaced out soloists grinding their way into the quarry I suppose.

den of comfort
We have a new tent - that came complete with free air mattress - and set up a den of comfort with duvets and pillows. Normally I spend my 24 hours out on course rather than in the tent so I’m not sure if being this comfortable is a good thing. I mean, at some point in the dead of night I’ll probably have to crawl out of this soft fluffiness and into damp riding gear and drag my sorry arse out onto a rain sodden course.
It’s dark by the time we get the tent and gazebo in place. Just time to eat some dips and chips and enjoy some beer with the Johnsons before bed.
* still banned from driving.
