Life with B.O.B.
As I’m currently advised not to drive I’ve been making more use of my BOB YAK trailer. It has been idle since my attempt at a Polaris a couple years ago, and the month my wife and I used it to commute 15 miles a day from rented accomodation to work.
This week while my wife has had the car I’ve needed two, different, bags of horse feed. There’s no way you’re carrying one of those in a rucksack or in panniers. No, that’s exactly the sort of load that a BOB is made for.
So I fitted the BOB skewer to the rat bike and hitched her up. 5 miles away the local supplier only had one of the bags I needed. No problem. Next day I rode 10 miles to another supplier and bought one there instead.
That made things easier. Officially 40 kilos is overloading the BOB. I don’t worry so much about the BOB coping, as the towing bike, so that weight usually gets reserved to towing behind a tandem. It was nice to have a manageable load in there.
Today I needed to do some serious food shopping. I drew admiring looks from the pensioners as I drew up at the local store and parked up at the bike stands. No, really. One of them even came over to chat about it and ask if it was any good for camping.
I realised as I rode home, fortunate to live close to work, a good local store, and a railway station, that we could probably do without the car if we had to. So long as we had the BOB.
