Mayhem
Well, I completed my two laps without actually dying of a heart attack. I’ll get no prizes for my times, as in respect to my recent problems I got off and pushed on all the major climbs. I fairly surprised myself on the downhills though, especially the twisty wooded sections Back On Track and Christina’s Singletrack World.
It was strange for the first time in 8 years to be able to spend this particular weekend at Mayhem, but be able to go to bed and not have to worry about getting up in the night to go out and ride a lap.
We camped right next to the course at the bottom of the Red Bull Climb. A perfect spot for heckling.
I spent quite a large portion of the race just sat eating crap and cheering on my fellow soloists. However our efforts were as nothing compared to the Cheeky trails crowd or the motley crew to our left with their loudhailer. The unicyclists were a paricular target.
“You’re missing a wheel”, delivered in “come in #66 your time is up” style was a particular highlight. However Emma takes the prize for best heckle (also of a unicyclist) with a deadpan “Take your hand off your penis” which caused the poor lad to laugh so much he fell off.
Officially I managed 94/94 in the solo men category. Overall though I didn’t come last. One team managed a whole lap before quitting.
I’m looking forward to Sleepless now, where I should have a team place.
And that’s one more on the way to SSMM X out of the way.
