Nothing To See Here, Move Along

Emotional See Saw

Emotionally see-sawing about my health right now (see 71/48).

Initial blood test results and, in particular my viral antibodies, indicate that I might just have strained my heart by continuing to train when ill. About two weeks before the incident I had been feeling lethargic and sleepy. But my riding was still good. My 50+ mile road loop round the Trough of Bowland had been achieved in record speed, and on the Pompino too. Sure, I’d had one day when commuting was a bit tough - but the very next night I’d enjoyed a Thursday Evening Calderdale ride no problem.

Anyway, that’s the best that can happen - simply take a proper rest to cure.

Unfortunately I have all the symptoms bar one of something called Hypertrophic Myocardiopathy. This is the ultimate worst case and would curtail all my athletic activities.

ARSE.

I’m itching to get out and ride - though I’ve already cancelled this weekends Spring Polaris in the Brecon Beacons. And I’m not even bothering to enter next months EnduroPLUS.

I will be fit for Mountain Mayhem though. Even if I have to push up every damn climb and only ride the descents I’m not quitting. Is it worth the sake of my long term health just to finish a race? Well, it’s been an aim of mine to complete the first ten Mountain Mayhems. What is the point of a long life if you can’t live it?

That sounds selfish when you consider I have a wife and three horses to look after and if I do drop dead halfway round she’s going to be in financial deep shit. But she’s behind me on this one.

Depending on when you catch me I’ll be upbeat about this. Other times I’ll be seriously contemplating selling off the hardware (except my Spot which will be wall mounted).

Don’t you even think about giving up! Maybe you just need to ride with me more. I’m slow and can’t do big long rides with my current state of endurance. Plus I really like to stop and look at the sheep and the views. In other words, I make hearts happy when they ride with me. :~)
