This is the first race I've failed to finish of my own volition rather than being forced out by technical failure, since the Cheshire Classic in 1992. I was so disappointed in myself at that one that since then I have kept going to the bitter end unless forced out by a mechanical failure or enforced cut-off. I have oft-times cursed bikes that have refused to break when I have wanted to quit. I nearly got out the chain splitter at one Drumlanrig 6 hour race from which better men /coff dr jon /coff than me had retired.
